Haryana Civic Elections 2026: BJP Dominates Key Municipal Bodies Across State
The Bharatiya Janata Party registered a sweeping victory in the Haryana municipal elections on Wednesday, securing major wins in Ambala and Sonipat while maintaining an unassailable lead in Panchkula. The party also performed strongly in several other local body elections and won the president’s seat in the Sampla municipal committee, considered a stronghold of former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Notably, the Indian National Congress did not field a candidate for the Sampla local elections. BJP workers and leaders celebrated the results by distributing sweets at party offices. Nayab Singh Saini praised the BJP’s performance in the civic polls, which came soon after the party’s major victories in West Bengal and Assam. He said the people had once again endorsed the policies and programmes of the government led by Narendra Modi. Targeting the Congress party, Saini stated that voters had rejected it once again. He alleged that Congress relies on falsehoods and added that people now understand the party’s “real face.” Referring to the BJP’s victory in Sampla, Saini said that people no longer trust Hooda. He further stated that the state government was working with honesty and transparency while fulfilling promises made to the public. According to official trends, BJP candidate Akshita Saini defeated Congress rival Kulwinder Kaur by 21,358 votes in the Ambala mayoral contest. Independent candidate Sonia Rani finished third. In Panchkula, BJP candidate Shyamlal Bansal established a decisive lead over Congress candidate Sudha Bhardwaj for the mayor’s post, while AAP candidate Rajesh Kumar remained in third place. In Sonipat, BJP candidate Rajiv Jain defeated Congress candidate Kamal Diwan by 23,247 votes in the mayoral election. Indian National Lok Dal candidate Anand Kumar finished third. At present, the sitting mayors in the municipal corporations of Panchkula, Ambala and Sonipat all belong to the BJP. In Sampla municipal committee, BJP candidate Praveen defeated independent candidate Ankit by 687 votes. In Dharuhera, BJP’s Satyanarayan alias Ajay Jangra defeated independent candidate Babu Lal by 6,236 votes, while Congress remained in third position. However, in Uklana, BJP candidate Nikita Goyal lost to independent candidate Reema Soni by 2,806 votes. In Rewari municipal council, BJP’s Vinita Pippal defeated Congress candidate Niharika by 21,445 votes. In Ambala municipal council, BJP won 16 wards, Congress secured three wards, and one ward was won by an independent candidate. In Sonipat municipal council, BJP won 17 wards while Congress secured victory in five wards. In several wards, Congress candidates even trailed behind independents.
