Raja Warring Meets Rahul Gandhi, Shares Four-and-a-Half Years of Punjab Congress Experience

Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Friday formally tendered his resignation as the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president after meeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the national capital.
Warring confirmed the development after the meeting, saying that he had formally submitted his resignation and that Gandhi expressed his affection and support during their interaction. The resignation clears the way for the Congress high command to announce a new president for the Punjab unit.
“I met Rahul Gandhi. I formally gave him my resignation as Punjab Congress president and he gave me a lot of love,” Warring said after the meeting.
According to Warring, Rahul Gandhi discussed the political situation in Punjab and sought information about the ground realities in the state. The discussion also covered the functioning of the Aam Aadmi Party government and the issues that the Congress would need to address going forward.
Warring said he shared his experience of around four-and-a-half years as Punjab Congress president with Gandhi. He also discussed the challenges facing the party, its strengths and the approach required to deal with those challenges.
The former PPCC chief said he thanked Rahul Gandhi for giving him the opportunity to lead the state Congress during a difficult period. He also conveyed that he remained available to serve the party whenever required.
The development follows Warring's decision on Thursday to change his social media profile bio to “former Punjab Congress president”, signalling that a leadership change was imminent.
Warring, who is the Lok Sabha MP from Ludhiana, took charge as Punjab Congress president after the party's poor performance in the 2022 Punjab Assembly election. The Congress won 18 of the 117 Assembly seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party formed the government.
With Warring's resignation now formally submitted, the Congress is expected to proceed with the appointment of his successor. Several names have been discussed within the party, including former Sangrur MP Vijay Inder Singla, though the Congress had not officially announced a replacement at the time of the report.
The leadership change comes ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly election and follows weeks of discussions within the state Congress over organisational changes and the party's leadership structure.
