09 May, 2026 07:41 AM

The political suspense surrounding government formation in Tamil Nadu has finally come to an end after the Governor granted approval to TVK chief and actor Vijay to form the government in the state. Vijay is now expected to take oath as the Chief Minister later today. On Friday, Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Lok Bhavan and formally staked claim to form the government. This marked the third consecutive day that Vijay approached the Governor regarding government formation. During the meeting, Vijay submitted letters of support from a total of 118 MLAs belonging to TVK, Congress, CPI, CPI(M), and VCK. Following the submission of the required support documents, the Governor approved his claim to form the government. In the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, TVK emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 out of the 234 seats. Vijay himself secured victory from two constituencies. With the support of five Congress MLAs and two legislators each from CPI, CPI(M), and VCK, the alliance crossed the majority mark in the Assembly. Earlier, Vijay had approached the Governor on May 6 and May 7 to stake claim to form the government. However, the Governor had then stated that he could not invite Vijay to form the government without proof of support from 118 legislators.
