PEI Aerospace Industry Set for Growth with Historic Manufacturing Investment
Prince Edward Island is set to receive a major boost to its aerospace sector following a historic investment announcement by the federal government. The federal government will provide $55.7 million in funding to MDS Coating Technologies, while the provincial government is also contributing nearly $55 million toward the project. The joint investment is expected to support the installation of advanced manufacturing machinery at the company’s facility and fund a 50,000-square-foot expansion. Officials estimate that the project will create approximately 120 new skilled jobs in the province. Mélanie Joly said the company is considered one of the world leaders in its field of technology. She stated that Canada is working to reduce its dependence on the United States by strengthening domestic manufacturing and the defence industry within the country. According to officials, the company’s specialized coating technology helps extend the lifespan of aircraft engines, improves fuel efficiency, and lowers maintenance costs. The technology is currently used in both commercial and military aircraft. Rob Lantz described the initiative as the largest private-sector investment in the province’s history. He said the project is expected to provide a major boost to the provincial economy and open new opportunities for the aerospace sector.
