India defeated New Zealand to win the T20 World Cup 2026, securing the title with a commanding 96-run victory. With this triumph, Team India has lifted the T20 World Cup trophy for the third time in its history. The final match of the T20 World Cup 2026 between India and New Zealand was played on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and decided to bowl first. Batting first after losing the toss, India posted a massive total of 255 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in 20 overs, setting a challenging target of 256 runs for New Zealand. Chasing the daunting total, the New Zealand team struggled against the Indian bowling attack and was eventually bowled out for 159 runs in 19 overs, handing India a comprehensive 96-run victory. Sanju Samson emerged as the hero of the match for India, scoring an impressive 89 runs off 46 balls. With this performance, Samson became the player with the highest individual score in a T20 World Cup final, breaking the previous record of 85 runs set by West Indies’ Marlon Samuels. In addition to Samson’s outstanding innings, Abhishek Sharma contributed 52 runs, while Ishan Kishan added 54 runs for India. For New Zealand, Jimmy Neesham claimed three wickets. It is noteworthy that India had previously won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and 2024. West Indies captured the title in 2012 and 2016, while England won it in 2010 and 2022, each claiming the trophy twice. With the victory in 2026, India has now become the only nation to win the T20 World Cup three times. Apart from these teams, Pakistan won the tournament in 2009, Sri Lanka in 2014, and Australia in 2021. New Zealand, however, has yet to win the T20 World Cup title.
