Trump Targets EU Auto Imports, Links Tariff Hike to Trade Agreement Concerns

02 May, 2026 10:38 AM

US President Donald Trump on Friday announced that tariffs on cars and trucks imported from the European Union will be increased to 25 percent starting next week. Trump stated that the decision was taken because the European Union has not adhered to the terms of a previously agreed trade deal. He also clarified that European companies manufacturing cars and trucks within the United States would not be subject to these taxes. According to Trump, the United States is currently witnessing the construction of several new automobile and truck manufacturing facilities, with total investments exceeding $100 billion. He claimed that this level of investment and development is unprecedented in the country and will generate significant employment opportunities for American citizens. The announcement comes in the backdrop of a trade agreement reached last year between Trump and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. The agreement, concluded in July, is known as the “Turnberry Agreement,” named after Trump’s golf course in Scotland. The primary aim of the agreement was to ease growing trade tensions between the United States and the European Union. Under its terms, both sides agreed to balance trade relations and reduce tariff-related disputes. The deal imposed a 15 percent tariff on most goods imported into the US from the EU. The agreement was considered significant, especially as the Trump administration had earlier threatened to impose tariffs as high as 30 percent. The latest move to raise tariffs to 25 percent is expected to further strain trade relations between the two sides.
