Ottawa’s City Council is preparing to vote on a proposal to strip former U.S. President Donald Trump's name from a residential street in the Canadian capital. On Wednesday, September 9, Councillor Riley Brockington introduced a motion calling for the renaming of Trump Avenue, with a formal council vote scheduled for September 23. If approved by the city council, municipal officials will consult directly with the residents living on Trump Avenue to gather suggestions for a replacement street name. The new designation could draw inspiration from New York City or take an entirely different direction. Brockington noted that if the street were evaluated under Ottawa's formal commemorative naming process today, the title "Trump Avenue" would fail to meet current city criteria. He previously described having a street named Trump Avenue within his River Ward as an embarrassment. The renewed effort comes against the backdrop of escalating trade tensions between Canada and the United States. It is not the first time the street's designation has come under scrutiny; a similar renaming survey conducted among neighborhood residents in 2021 resulted in a deadlocked 21–21 tie, with 20 households abstaining. Under Ottawa city regulations, a street name change requires approval from a simple majority of residents—defined as at least 50% plus one vote—before the proposal can proceed.
