Strait of Hormuz Crisis: Trump Pauses “Project Freedom” Mission
The United States President Donald Trump has announced the suspension of the ongoing maritime rescue mission “Project Freedom” amid what he described as “significant progress” in negotiations aimed at ending tensions with Iran. The development has raised expectations of a possible comprehensive agreement between the two sides. In a post on the social media platform Truth Social on Tuesday, Trump stated that substantial diplomatic advances had been made with Iranian representatives, moving closer to a final and complete settlement. He said the decision to pause the mission was influenced by requests from Pakistan and several other countries, as well as the success achieved during recent military operations against Iran. Trump clarified that while the broader containment measures against Iran will continue, “Project Freedom” has been temporarily suspended to assess whether a final agreement can be reached. The operation had been launched just a day earlier to rescue vessels trapped in the Strait of Hormuz due to blocked sea routes. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced during a White House press briefing that “Operation Epic Fury,” which began on February 28, has been successfully completed. He emphasized that the United States prefers a path of peace rather than escalation of conflict. Rubio further explained that “Project Freedom” was designed as a humanitarian rescue mission aimed at saving approximately 23,000 citizens from 87 countries who were stranded in the Persian Gulf region due to the Iranian situation. He stressed that the operation was not an offensive military action but strictly a rescue effort. The announcements come at a critical moment in the Iran–Israel–US geopolitical tensions, as diplomatic efforts appear to be gaining momentum alongside continued security concerns in the region.
