Actor Imran Khan Faces Police Action After Joining Protest Seeking CEC’s Resignation

15 Oct, 2026 01:05 PM

Mumbai Police has issued a notice directing American citizen and Bollywood actor Imran Khan to leave India by October 28 for allegedly violating provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, officials said on Thursday.

The action follows the actor’s participation in a protest held in Mumbai on October 10, where demonstrators demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Imran Khan, who is the nephew of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, was briefly detained by the police during the demonstration.

Police Cite Restrictions on Foreign Nationals

A police officer said Imran Khan is a foreign national and not an Indian citizen. According to the officer, the relevant provisions of the law restrict foreign nationals from participating in political protests and political activities on Indian soil.

The police have formally served the actor with a notice directing him to leave the country by October 28. Officials confirmed that he had received a copy of the notice.

Further administrative action in the matter is underway, the police said.

Kirit Somaiya Had Sought Action

Former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya had urged Mumbai Police to take action against Imran Khan for participating in the protest in support of the Cockroach Janata Party despite being a foreign national.

Somaiya had also sought clarification from the police on whether a foreign citizen was permitted to take part in such demonstrations.

The police action comes amid scrutiny of the actor’s participation in the October 10 protest, during which demonstrators called for the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation.
