Dhruv Rathee Claims He Was ‘Kidnapped’, Not Arrested, After Release from Gurugram Police Custody

11 Oct, 2026 02:13 PM

Popular YouTuber Dhruv Rathee has levelled serious allegations against the Gurugram Police following his release from custody, claiming that he was “kidnapped” rather than formally arrested or detained.

Rathee was taken into custody ahead of a proposed protest organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar in Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. After his release late on Saturday night or early Sunday, he issued a video statement on social media questioning the police action.

In his social media post, Rathee wrote, “I was not arrested or detained, I was KIDNAPPED.” He also asserted that he had not submitted any written undertaking to the Gurugram Police.

Released at around 3 am

According to officials, Rathee was released at around 3 am on Sunday and handed over to his family.

He was taken into custody at approximately 9.30 am on Saturday from his residence in Central Park? No — the reported location was the Central Vihar Society in Sector 56, Gurugram.

The police action took place ahead of the CJP’s planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar, where the party and other protesters intended to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Rathee’s allegations have brought renewed attention to the police action surrounding the proposed protest. His claim that he was neither formally arrested nor detained, but instead “kidnapped”, contrasts with the reported account of his custody and subsequent release.

The developments come amid heightened security in Delhi and a wider crackdown on protesters ahead of the CJP demonstration.
