A tragic incident at a Lower Manhattan subway station has resulted in the deaths of a 24-year-old Indian-origin woman and her 24-year-old Nepali-American friend after they were struck by an oncoming subway train. According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the victims have been identified as Malaika Chitre from Dayton, New Jersey, and Shivam Kaul from Sayreville, New Jersey. The incident occurred at approximately 3:15 AM at the Spring Street subway station, where both individuals were present on the tracks when a southbound 4 train struck them. A video recorded by a bystander and circulated on social media showed the pair sitting on the tracks just seconds before the collision. Law enforcement sources citing the train operator reported that Chitre appeared to be laughing and pulling Kaul toward her while sitting on the rails. The operator attempted to engage the emergency brakes upon spotting them but was unable to stop the train in time. Police responding to reports of individuals in need of medical assistance found both victims on the tracks, where they were pronounced dead at the scene. Approximately 100 passengers were evacuated from the train following the incident. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding why the pair were on the tracks. Law enforcement sources stated that detectives are looking into whether intoxication played a role in delaying their awareness of the approaching train. While no suicide note was recovered, investigators have not definitively ruled out any possibilities. Both Chitre and Kaul were alumni of Rutgers University, having graduated around the same time. Chitre worked as an Operations Specialist at Acadia Pharmaceuticals, while Kaul was employed as a Financial Data Analyst at Bloomberg. Friends, neighbors, and community members remembered both individuals as bright and well-liked young professionals, expressing shock over the tragedy. The NYPD confirmed that the investigation into the deaths remains ongoing.
