CJI Surya Kant Declines Meeting Request from INDIA Bloc Leaders, Citing Sub Judice Matters

12 Oct, 2026 11:20 AM

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has declined a request for a formal meeting put forward by the Congress-led opposition 'INDIA' bloc leaders. The leadership has instead been advised to approach the judiciary through proper petition filings ahead of their scheduled march toward the Supreme Court. According to sources, the CJI conveyed that the specific grievances and issues the opposition leaders intend to raise are already sub judice, with active hearings underway within the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice noted that the judiciary cannot entertain political party delegations on its administrative side, underlining that the primary role of the court is to adjudicate formal petitions and deliver rulings according to law. Reiterating the constitutional standing of the institution, the CJI emphasized that as the nation's apex judicial body, the Supreme Court's doors are open around the clock, remaining firmly committed to protecting every citizen's fundamental rights.Despite the meeting being declined, the INDIA bloc's planned protest march is expected to proceed. The demonstrations are part of a broader series of protests organized by opposition parties demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, asserted that the planned march belongs to all citizens of India rather than any single political party, while alleging that the government has benefited from the controversial SIR process.
