Jalandhar Doctor Death Case: Husband Accused of Extramarital Affair and Financial Fraud
A woman doctor was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Jalandhar’s Kewal Vihar Colony, prompting a police investigation and serious allegations from her family. The deceased woman’s father has accused her husband of maintaining an extramarital relationship, subjecting her to domestic violence, and fraudulently obtaining a loan of ₹2.5 crore in her name. Although the family has alleged murder, the police have, at present, registered a case of abetment to suicide against the husband. The deceased has been identified as Dr. Meenakshi Sood, who was posted at Civil Hospital, Kapurthala. She was married in 2018 to Dr. Piyush Sood, an eye surgeon and owner of National Eye Care Hospital. According to available information, the couple had been living separately for some time. On Wednesday, when Dr. Meenakshi did not respond to doorbell rings or phone calls, police were informed. Officers later broke open the windows of the house and recovered her body from inside. A case has been registered against Dr. Piyush Sood at Division No. 6 Police Station under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A post-mortem examination is scheduled to be conducted at Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, to determine the exact cause of death. The deceased doctor’s father, Pramod Kumar, a resident of Fazilka, alleged that his daughter had discovered in 2023 that her husband was involved in an extramarital relationship with a female employee working at his hospital. He claimed that CCTV footage related to the matter was also available. According to Pramod Kumar, his daughter had taken a loan of ₹45 lakh against her salary to help establish her husband’s private hospital. However, he said she was deeply distressed after learning about her husband’s alleged infidelity in December 2023. He further stated that she had been living separately in a rented accommodation since July 2025. The father also alleged that last month, when Dr. Meenakshi applied for a home loan to purchase a new house, she was shocked to learn from her CIBIL records that a loan of ₹2.5 crore was already active in her name. He claimed that the loan had been obtained without her knowledge or consent and described it as a major fraud. According to the family, when Dr. Meenakshi sought a mutual divorce on the condition that the alleged ₹2.5 crore loan issue be resolved and her earlier financial contributions be returned, her husband allegedly began threatening her. Investigating officer ASI Satpal Singh said that an FIR has been registered and further action will be taken based on the findings of the post-mortem report and other evidence collected during the investigation.
