Daler Mehndi’s Uttarakhand Performance Sparks Row; Badshah Urges Respect for Artists

21 Oct, 2026 12:58 PM

Rapper Badshah has expressed support for Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi following a controversy over the latter’s performance at an event in Uttarakhand. Badshah said artists who have made significant contributions to the music industry deserve respect and that publicly humiliating a performer is deeply hurtful.

In a message shared on social media, Badshah said audiences could express disappointment with an artist’s performance, but that criticism should not turn into public humiliation. He emphasised that established artists deserve dignity, particularly when they may be going through a difficult phase.

The controversy erupted after a video of Daler Mehndi performing at the Maa Kunjapuri Fair in Tehri Garhwal went viral. The event was organised as part of the Navratri celebrations.

Mika Singh Cites Brother’s Health Problems

Amid the controversy, singer Mika Singh, Daler Mehndi’s brother, shared a video message on Tuesday explaining that Daler had recently undergone surgery and had not been keeping well for the past two years.

Mika also rejected allegations that his brother had consumed alcohol. He said Daler did not drink alcohol and had continued performing with his band despite his health difficulties.

Mika further pointed out that several performers use pre-recorded music during their shows, questioning why such practices do not always attract similar scrutiny.

Kapil Sharma Also Supports Daler Mehndi

Actor and comedian Kapil Sharma also expressed support for the singer. He urged people to show greater empathy and kindness towards one another, noting that the public may not know the full details of another person’s health or personal circumstances.

The statements from Badshah, Mika Singh and Kapil Sharma came amid growing discussion on social media about Daler Mehndi’s performance and the criticism directed at him.

Uttarakhand Minister Criticises the Performance

The controversy began after a video of Daler Mehndi’s performance at the Maa Kunjapuri Fair in Tehri Garhwal circulated online. Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister and Narendra Nagar MLA Subodh Uniyal criticised the singer’s performance.

According to Uniyal, the singer appeared unable to stand properly on stage and was merely moving his lips while the songs played. The minister also claimed that Daler Mehndi had been paid Rs 35 lakh for the performance and said the singer should have done justice to his art.

The remarks triggered a wider debate about the performance, the treatment of artists in public and the importance of showing sensitivity towards individuals whose health circumstances may not be fully known.
