India’s Suchika Tariyal has etched her name in history by winning the country's first-ever medal in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) at the Asian Games, where the sport has been included for the first time. The 36-year-old fighter secured a bronze medal in the women's 60kg category after a dramatic and closely contested semi-final.
The semi-final saw Suchika Tariyal face Singapore’s Hui Hoon Teo in a thrilling contest that remained evenly balanced throughout. Both regulation rounds ended level, forcing officials to award a one-minute overtime period to determine the winner.
Following the overtime round, judges initially declared the Singaporean athlete the winner. However, the Indian team challenged the decision, prompting a review of the bout. According to MMA Federation president Nikhil Kundar, the judges later concluded that the match had ended in a draw.
Under international MMA competition rules, when a bout remains tied, the result is decided based on the athletes’ official weigh-in measurements taken earlier in the day. Teo weighed 58.5 kilograms, while Suchika Tariyal weighed 59.2 kilograms. As the Singaporean fighter was 700 grams lighter, she was awarded victory and advanced to the final.
As a result, Suchika Tariyal had to settle for the bronze medal despite her strong performance. The decision left the Indian athlete visibly emotional, and she was seen in tears on the mat after the outcome was announced.
A resident of Kiloi village in Haryana’s Rohtak district, Suchika Tariyal nevertheless achieved a significant milestone for Indian sport. Her bronze medal marks India's first podium finish in Mixed Martial Arts at the Asian Games and adds a historic chapter to the country's achievements in the continental event.
The medal is particularly noteworthy as MMA is making its debut appearance at the Asian Games, giving Indian athletes an opportunity to compete on one of Asia's biggest sporting stages in the rapidly growing combat sport.
