CJP Leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das Released After Preventive Detention in Delhi

11 Oct, 2026 02:00 PM

Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das were released on Sunday after being produced before an executive magistrate in connection with the party’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The three leaders were detained by Delhi Police on Saturday, October 10, ahead of the demonstration. They were released after furnishing a surety bond of ₹50,000 to maintain peace and good behaviour for one year, according to the police.

CJP legal affairs head Ratna Singh said the leaders had been released on the condition that they would not breach the peace during the stipulated period.

In a statement, the party described the release as a “major legal victory” and alleged that its leaders had faced nearly 24 hours of unlawful preventive detention. The party also criticised what it called arbitrary police action amid heightened security arrangements in the national capital.

Delhi Police maintained that the preventive arrests had been carried out after following the due legal procedures. According to the police, the three leaders were detained under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and produced before the Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) Court at Delhi Cantonment on Sunday.

Fresh detentions as CJP protest enters second day

The release of the CJP leaders came as protests against the Chief Election Commissioner entered their second day in Delhi. Several demonstrators were detained on Sunday while marching towards Jantar Mantar from Connaught Place’s Inner Circle and Rajiv Chowk.

Protesters were heard raising slogans demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. Security personnel moved in to stop the march, with several demonstrators reportedly resisting detention before being taken towards police buses.

Members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and other student organisations were also detained while attempting to reach Jantar Mantar. The SFI alleged that its All India President Adarsh M Saji, Delhi State Secretary Sooraj Elamon, Central Executive Committee member Abhijith Manilal and hundreds of other members were attacked and detained at Rajiv Chowk.

Some protesters alleged that they were manhandled during the police action, while the SFI said it would continue its demonstrations.

More than 30,000 police and paramilitary personnel were set to be deployed across Delhi amid extensive security arrangements to prevent protesters from reaching the designated demonstration site.

Over 7,000 people detained during Saturday’s crackdown

The CJP leaders’ detention followed a major security operation across the national capital on Saturday, when more than 7,000 protesters were detained at various locations, preventing many from reaching Jantar Mantar.

Several opposition leaders, including former chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan and Manik Sarkar, were also detained while attempting to join the protest.

Delhi Police said at least 20 FIRs had been registered in connection with incidents linked to Saturday’s demonstrations, alleging that police personnel had been assaulted. Separately, four men were arrested over an alleged assault on protesters near the Civic Centre during the October 10 protest.

Four journalists’ organisations, including the Press Club of India and the Indian Women’s Press Corps, condemned the detention and alleged harassment of journalists covering the demonstrations. The organisations said some reporters were detained despite displaying press identity cards, while the phones and equipment of some journalists were seized.

CJP calls for protests in Mumbai

The CJP also announced a protest in Mumbai on Sunday against the detention of its leaders and what it described as a crackdown on democratic rights.

Ajinkya Shinde, the party’s national organisation in-charge, said protesters would assemble at T Junction near Shivaji Park at 4 pm. He alleged that thousands of people had been detained in Delhi and other parts of the country and warned that the party would continue its demonstrations.

The CJP and opposition groups have been demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The allegations remain central to the ongoing political confrontation.

CJP to hold press conference at 2 pm

Following the release of its three leaders, the CJP announced that it would hold a press conference at 2 pm on Sunday. The briefing is expected to come amid continuing protests, allegations of police excesses and heightened security across Delhi.

The party has reiterated its resolve to continue the agitation, even as police maintain restrictions around Jantar Mantar, Connaught Place and other key areas of the capital.
