Maharoof Calls Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup Exit “Painful and Shameful”
Former Sri Lanka all-rounder Farveez Maharoof has called for “hard decisions” to be made following Sri Lanka’s disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup 2026, describing the team’s performance as “hurtful, painful and shameful.” Sri Lanka’s campaign came to an early end after a poor showing against New Zealand on Wednesday in Colombo. The defeat followed another batting collapse against England, where the team was bowled out for just 95, deepening concerns over their consistency and approach. Speaking after the match, Maharoof criticised the team’s batting, pointing out that most dismissals were avoidable. He noted that apart from a quality delivery that dismissed Pathum Nissanka, the rest of the wickets were given away too easily. He added that repeating similar mistakes in a must-win match highlighted serious shortcomings in the batting unit. Nissanka has been Sri Lanka’s standout performer in the tournament, notably scoring an unbeaten 100 off 52 balls against Australia. However, in the crucial clash, he was dismissed on the very first ball by Matt Henry, a moment Maharoof said effectively ended Sri Lanka’s hopes in the game. Sri Lanka entered the tournament after a 3-0 home series loss to England. While they managed wins against Oman, Ireland, and Australia during the group stage, their campaign faltered in the latter stages with defeats to Zimbabwe, England, and New Zealand. The losses to England and New Zealand were particularly marked by poor batting displays. Maharoof expressed frustration over what he described as a recurring pattern in Sri Lanka cricket — occasional strong performances followed by sudden declines. He stressed that this inconsistency has persisted for years and must now be addressed. He urged selectors and team management to evaluate the future of the squad, including assessing player capabilities and making necessary changes. Maharoof indicated that significant decisions could be expected in the coming weeks, warning that failure to act would be surprising. Sri Lanka will conclude their T20 World Cup campaign with a match against Pakistan in Pallekele on February 28.
