A total of 53 post offices have been closed or merged in Punjab over the past 11 years, as part of a nationwide restructuring exercise undertaken by the Department of Posts under the Ministry of Communications. According to official information, since 2014, a total of 1,280 post offices across the country have either been shut down or merged. These include 53 post offices in Punjab. Despite these changes, India currently has 164,999 post offices, while 3,838 post offices continue to function in Punjab. The government clarified that the closure or merger of post offices was carried out in accordance with prescribed norms, particularly maintaining the minimum required distance between two post offices. It stated that no relaxation or modification was made to these guidelines during the process. Officials maintained that the restructuring initiative aims to make postal services more efficient, digitally enabled, and resource-optimised. The nationwide exercise is being seen as a significant administrative step to streamline operations and improve service delivery. Data shows that in Punjab, the closures or mergers were carried out in phases between 2014-15 and 2024-25. During this period, 4 post offices were affected in 2014-15, 1 in 2016-17, 2 in 2018-19, 2 in 2020-21, 11 in 2021-22, 25 in 2022-23, 4 in 2023-24, and 2 in 2024-25.
