Day 2 of Punjab Assembly Session Witnesses High Drama: Opposition Walkout, Sukhpal Khaira Suspended, and Resolution Passed Against CEC
The second day of the Punjab Legislative Assembly session witnessed intense political turmoil on Thursday, marked by strong protests from the opposition, the suspension of a senior legislator, and the passage of a government resolution against the Chief Election Commissioner.
Opposition Protests and Suspension of Sukhpal Khaira
Proceedings began amid high drama as opposition Congress legislators staged demonstrations outside and inside the assembly, carrying placards and criticizing the state government over various public issues, including law and order, sacrilege cases, and the rising debt burden. Concurrently, family members of a deceased youth from Abohar staged a protest outside the assembly alongside BJP leaders, demanding justice.
Inside the house, due to unruly behavior and defiance of the chair, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema moved a motion under Rule 97(2) of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Punjab Legislative Assembly. Following the motion, MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira was suspended for the remainder of the current assembly session. Dissatisfied with the government's stance, opposition members eventually walked out of the house.
CM Mann Alleges Political Vendetta Over Airport Customs Check
Addressing the assembly, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann termed the recent customs scrutiny he faced at the Delhi airport upon returning from Paris as a deliberate act of political harassment. He linked the incident directly to the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) ongoing demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral discrepancies. The Chief Minister claimed that the customs action was executed as retaliation for the party's firm stance against the poll panel.
Resolution Against Chief Election Commissioner Passed
In a significant legislative move, the Punjab Assembly passed an official resolution moved by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The resolution expressed serious concern over alleged irregularities and missing names in voter lists across the country, demanding an independent and transparent investigation into the matter and accountability from the poll panel.
During the session, various other issues were also discussed, including a demand by MLA Kulwant Singh for a regulatory authority to curb alleged overcharging by private hospitals, and updates on transport services along key routes by the transport minister.
The assembly proceedings were subsequently adjourned and will resume on October 27.
