Punjab Assembly Passes Condemnation Motion Against Sukhpal Singh Khaira
Proceedings of the budget session continued for the fourth day in the Punjab Legislative Assembly amid intense debate and disruption over remarks made by Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira about women during an interview. The issue was raised in the House, triggering a heated exchange among members. Following the discussion, a condemnation motion related to Khaira’s post was introduced in the Assembly. Members were then invited to express their views on the matter before a vote was conducted. During the voting process, the Speaker asked members whether they wished to vote “yes” or “no” on the motion. Members from the ruling side responded loudly in favor of the motion by saying “yes.” Meanwhile, members of the opposition neither supported nor opposed the motion verbally and remained silent. Cabinet Minister Aman Arora remarked that the opposition should clearly state either “yes” or “no” on the issue. The Speaker then clarified that silence should not be considered as opposition to the motion. Following this, the condemnation motion against Khaira was declared passed in the House. The development took place during the ongoing budget session, where the controversy surrounding Khaira’s remarks became a major point of discussion in the Assembly.
