Bathinda Prayer Meeting Triggers Controversy as Groups Allege Religious Conversions
A prayer gathering scheduled to be held by members of the Christian community on October 28 at the PUDA Ground on Bibiwala Road has sparked controversy, with several organisations opposing the event and alleging that it could be used for religious conversions.
Describing the proposed gathering as a “religious conversion conference,” representatives of the Kaumantari Hindu Sikh Mahasabha, under the leadership of Nihang Singh organisations, submitted a memorandum to Additional Deputy Commissioner Gurjinder Singh in the absence of the Deputy Commissioner.
In their memorandum, the groups urged the district administration to stop the event, investigate the matter and take appropriate legal action against those found responsible if any violations are established.
Allegations Raised Over Event
Sukhpal Singh Sarna, General Secretary of the Mahasabha and a BJP leader, alleged that certain individuals were organizing prayer meetings in the name of Christianity and were allegedly attempting to influence innocent Hindus and Sikhs.
He claimed that people were being influenced through assertions related to faith healing, removal of evil spirits, and curing illnesses. Sarna stated that any attempt to encourage religious conversion through inducements or other means would not be accepted.
He also questioned the need for providing government land for an event that has become the subject of public controversy. Sarna called upon the administration to examine the facts surrounding the programme and take appropriate action based on its findings.
Warning of Protest
Representatives of Nihang Sikh organisations also cautioned the administration against ignoring their concerns.
Jathedar Sarabjit Singh of 96 Crore Khalsa Dal Budha Dal Sri Damdama Sahib and Baba Balam Singh of Sri Dasmesh Tarna Dal said that if the administration failed to address the matter, stop the event, and investigate the allegations, Nihang Singh organisations and other members of society would launch their own protest.
They stated that if such a situation arises, responsibility for any resulting developments would lie with the administration.
Delegation Meets Administration
Those present during the submission of the memorandum included Mithu Singh, President of Gurdwara Civil Lines; Hardeep Singh Bittu, General Secretary of Gurdwara Singh Sabha; along with Ashutosh Tiwari, Sandeep Agarwal, Nitin Goel, Babuna Prasad, Ajay Goel, and other community representatives.
The issue has brought the proposed October 28 event under public scrutiny, with the administration now facing demands for an inquiry and a review of permissions related to the gathering.
