29 Jul, 2026 05:54 PM

National record holder Sarvesh Kushare scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a silver medal in the men's high jump event at the Commonwealth Games after a closely contested final against Jamaica's Romaine Beckford. The 31-year-old Indian athlete successfully cleared 2.25 metres during the competition. Kushare and Beckford both failed to clear the 2.28-metre mark, leaving the gold medal to be decided on the count-back rule. Beckford was awarded the gold medal as he had one fewer failed attempt than Kushare during the competition. Despite narrowly missing the top podium spot, Kushare's silver medal marked a historic achievement for Indian athletics in the Commonwealth Games high jump event. England's Jack Kimani secured the bronze medal with a jump of 2.20 metres. India's second entrant in the event, Adarsh Ram, finished in fifth place after clearing 2.15 metres. Kushare's performance is a significant milestone for Indian athletics, making him the country's first athlete to earn a silver medal in the men's high jump at the Commonwealth Games.
