Facing sharp criticism over allegations of custodial torture of anti-drug activist Mohanjeet Singh from Sheron village in Sangrur district, the Punjab government on Saturday transferred DSP Harvinder Singh and directed three other police officers to report immediately to the Sangrur police lines. This marks the first major administrative action following the incident. According to orders issued by the Director General of Police (DGP), DSP Harvinder Singh, who was serving as DSP (SD) in Sunam, has been shifted on “administrative grounds” to the vacant post of DSP in the 1st CDO Battalion at Bahadurgarh, Patiala. The Police Establishment Committee instructed that he be relieved immediately and report to his new posting by September 6. In a separate directive, Sangrur SSP ordered the transfer of Inspector Prateek Jindal (SHO, City Sunam Police Station), SI Baljeet Singh (SHO, Cheema Police Station), and ASI Harpreet Singh (In-charge, District Police City Sunam) to the police lines, also citing administrative reasons. The action follows allegations by Mohanjeet Singh, who was taken into custody on September 2 after waving black flags and raising slogans during Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s “Lok Milni” event. Mohanjeet claimed he was subjected to torture in custody, including electric shocks and forced drug administration. The alleged abuse has triggered strong political reactions. Opposition leaders Pratap Singh Bajwa, Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, and Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Badal visited Mohanjeet at Sangrur Civil Hospital, demanding strict action against the officers involved. Warring and Bajwa separately urged the National Human Rights Commission to conduct an independent and time-bound inquiry. Meanwhile, the Bar Council wrote to the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, seeking suo motu action and warning of a public interest litigation if no steps were taken within 48 hours. Sangrur police have ordered a departmental inquiry into the allegations, stating that Mohanjeet’s detention was a precautionary measure. Officials noted that medical examination before his court appearance revealed no fresh injuries. Police also pointed out that Mohanjeet already faces around eight serious criminal cases.
