Two Alexandrine Parakeets Recovered as Wildlife Department Cracks Down
The Wildlife Department has arrested a युवक in Ludhiana’s Jamalpur area for allegedly trafficking prohibited birds. Two rare ‘Ram Tota’ (Alexandrine Parakeet) were recovered from his possession during the operation. According to officials, a case has been registered against the accused under various provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The charges include Sections 2, 39, 48, 48A, 49, 50, and 51, and an investigation has been initiated. The action followed a tip-off received by the Ludhiana Wildlife Department’s range officer, indicating that a youth from Mundian Kalan village was involved in the illegal trade of protected birds. Acting on the information, the department laid a trap and apprehended the accused from the Jamalpur locality. The arrested individual has been identified as Vishal Grewal, a resident of Lehri Nagar in Mundian Kalan, Ludhiana. During the search, two Alexandrine Parakeets were recovered from him, which he was allegedly attempting to sell through illegal means. The rescued birds have been shifted to a safe location. Officials noted that keeping or trading several species of parrots is illegal in India. If found guilty under the Wildlife Protection Act, the accused may face heavy fines and imprisonment. The department is now probing further to determine whether the accused is linked to a larger wildlife trafficking network and to identify other individuals involved in the illegal trade.
