Father Gives Up Canada PR to Help Son Chase Javelin Dream
Behind the rise of emerging Jalandhar javelin thrower Arshdeep Singh lies a story of sacrifice, family support and determination. As the young athlete prepares to compete in the Athletics Final Series, scheduled to begin in New Delhi on September 10, his father’s decision to give up a settled life in Canada has become an important part of his sporting journey. Arshdeep’s father, Hardeep Singh, gave up his Canadian permanent residency and returned to India to ensure that his son could pursue his sporting ambitions without compromise. Arshdeep’s parents, Hardeep Singh and Lakhwinder Kaur, had been permanently settled in Canada for several years. However, around five years ago, they realised that it was becoming difficult for Arshdeep to manage his training, work and diet on his own while staying in Jalandhar. The family subsequently decided to return to Punjab so that Arshdeep could concentrate fully on his sporting career. Hardeep Singh, who serves as a Senior CCTC in the Railways, made the decision to prioritise his son’s aspirations over his settled life in Canada. Recalling the circumstances, Arshdeep said that when his father asked him about becoming permanently settled in Canada, he expressed his desire to continue playing in India. He said he had never shared his difficulties with his father, but his father understood the situation and eventually returned to India so that Arshdeep could focus on his sport without worries. Father’s Sporting Background Helped Arshdeep Hardeep Singh himself has a sporting background and was a national-level wrestler. His support has played a significant role in Arshdeep’s progress, with the young athlete going on to win several national and international medals. In May 2026, Arshdeep won a gold medal at the Indian Athletics Series held in Chennai. He has also secured a gold medal at the Junior SAIF Games and the Open Nationals, besides winning a bronze medal at the World School Games. From Cricket to Javelin Arshdeep, who is associated with Abohar, began his sporting journey with cricket at the age of 10. His career took a different direction after he met coach Bikramjit Singh, following which he chose javelin throw. According to coach Bikramjit Singh, Arshdeep possesses not only strong physical abilities but also an exceptional fighting spirit. The coach believes this determination sets him apart from other athletes. With the Athletics Final Series approaching, Arshdeep is now training day and night with the aim of delivering his best performance. His journey reflects not only his own hard work and sporting ambition but also the major sacrifice made by his father to support his dream.
