Members of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) staged a protest outside the Parliament Street Police Station on Friday, demanding justice for Sanjay Kumar, father of activist Nishoo Azad, who was allegedly attacked by a youth named Swatantra Bhardwaj. The party accused Delhi Police of negligence in handling the case. Led by CJP leader Saurabh Das, demonstrators gathered at the police station while a delegation including Nishoo, Chandrashekhar Azad, Saurabh Das, and Ashutosh Ranka met separately with the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) to press for action. The controversy escalated after Bhardwaj admitted in a podcast to attacking Kumar and claimed political connections had kept him out of jail. Following public outrage, Bhardwaj issued a clarification, stating his comments were misrepresented and that he acted only in self-defense. Rahul Gandhi’s Intervention The issue gained national attention when Nishoo posted a video appeal for help. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi responded with support, writing on X: “Nishoo, do not be afraid. I am with you. It is clear you are being targeted because you raise your voice for your community and students. On one hand, Amit Shah’s Delhi Police brutally suppresses students, while on the other, a criminal who assaulted a Dalit girl’s father roams free.” Gandhi directly questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging political protection for the accused and vowing to continue the fight until justice is delivered. Delhi Police Statement Delhi Police issued a clarification, stating that during a CJP protest at Jantar Mantar on June 23, Sanjay Kumar, a 38-year-old resident of Ghaziabad, sustained minor injuries after being struck by a bangle during a scuffle. Doctors at RML Hospital confirmed the injuries were not caused by a weapon and ruled out any skull fracture. Police added that a case was registered based on Kumar’s statement, and suspects Suraj Kumar (24) and Swatantra Bhardwaj (21) were served notices and questioned. Authorities assured that due legal process was followed and a charge sheet will soon be filed in court. The police rejected allegations of undue influence, calling them baseless. The incident continues to stir political debate, with activists demanding accountability and opposition leaders pressing the government for answers.
