SIM Binding Norms Deferred Till 2027, Messaging App Users Get More Time
The central government has extended the deadline for implementing ‘SIM binding’ rules for messaging and OTT platforms, offering temporary relief to users. Under the revised timeline, platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Snapchat will not be required to immediately enforce the new regulations. Additionally, instructions mandating automatic logout of web and desktop sessions every six hours, along with re-authentication through QR code pairing, have also been deferred for the time being. The government has now extended the deadline for implementing SIM binding rules to December 31, 2026. As a result, the new regulations will come into effect from January 1, 2027. The decision has been taken in response to demands from the industry seeking more time for compliance. As per the proposed rules, messaging applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal will not function on devices without an active SIM card. Furthermore, WhatsApp sessions logged in on computers will automatically log out every six hours. The government has stated that these measures are aimed at strengthening digital security and curbing cyber fraud. Under the SIM binding framework, users will be required to have the SIM card linked to their registered mobile number present in the device while accessing these applications.
